Historic Szczecin
History and architecture
Szczecin has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it belonged to various states, including the Duchy of Pomerania, Prussia, Germany, and after World War II it was annexed to Poland. The influence of different cultures is evident in the city’s architecture, where Prussian townhouses and modernist buildings can be found alongside Gothic churches.
Among the most important monuments of Szczecin are:
–Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes – Renaissance residence of the Griffin dynasty, rebuilt several times, today serving as a cultural center and museum.
–Wały Chrobrego -monumental viewing terraces over the Oder River, designed in the early 20th century by German architect Wilhelm Meyer-Schwartau. It is one of the most distinctive places in Szczecin, offering beautiful views of the river and harbor.
–St. Basilica. James – Gothic cathedral, whose history dates back to the 13th century. Its distinctive tower (110 meters high) is one of the highest vantage points in the city.
–Philharmonic Hall. Mieczyslaw Karlowicz – A modern building with a unique, soaring body, awarded many times at international architectural competitions.
